Both starters have 53 pitches. We’re about to add the bananas foster cooking process to the liveblog. So far, smoke has been generated (this might be because of the cutting board we melted on to a burner last week. Don’t worry, the plastic is nontoxic!)

9:05 Ortiz hits one right into the shift. Nick Adenhart is dead, and its really sad, and we wish TBS wouldn’t milk it quite so hard. The image on the outfield wall is nice, though.

David Ortiz apologized for being a distraction. Twenty minutes earlier, the player’s organization mea culpa’d: some of the players on the 2003 list didn’t actually test positive, saying that of the 104 names on the list, both the player’s association and MLB agree that only 96 of them actually tested positive. But Fox baseball says even fewer. And the definitions of a “positive test” may vary too.

The player’s association went on to say that there were legally available supplements that could have looked like steroids in the tests. That’s what Ortiz is strongly implying he was doing. The fact that the player’s association is going ahead and admitting their screw up now, as opposed to when other names leaked, points to that as well.

Of course, Ortiz knew he was on the list–everyone on the list knows they were on the list. But there are nine guys out there who couldn’t ever figure out what to do about it, given that they didn’t take steroids per se.

So now, for crap’s sake, release the list. Then, release all the other information you have about which people tested positive, which are the false positives on the list, and how they know. That’s the only way to get past this. And we need to get past this.

Now.

Johnny Damon to Red Sox Nation: “I’m Sorry, Take Me Back!”

OK, that’s not exactly what Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said today, when he spoke to Red Sox radio affiliate WEEI about David Ortiz’s steroid situation. In fact, he vouched for the integrity of his old teammate, saying he came away with a strong impression that Ortiz had no clue his name appeared on the 2003 steroid list, even though players who had tested positive were supposed to be notified posthaste.

Our first thought?

Damon wants in.

Consider: his contract expires in 2010, and he’s having a heck of a year. Even before he hit his 20th dinger last night, Damon had surpassed his home run total from all of last season. (Yes, Yankee Stadium as it now stands is kind of a bandbox, but his OBP–one of Damon’s historical strengths–is comparable to last year.) The Yankees are unlikely to have a spot for Damon, especially given that at some point, Derek Jeter is going to need to move to the outfield. He would make a lot of sense for the Sox, especially if he were willing to take a bit of a discount, and especially depending what happens to Jason Bay.

Johnny could have retired as a Red Sox (what’s the singular? We have no idea. Never have. Long argument.), and spent the rest of his life dining out on his Game 7 grand slam and his amazing hair. He picked a little more money and a few more years over loyalty to the rivalry, and to New York he went.

Please don’t misunderstand: UPH is incredibly impressed with Damon’s forthrightness and loyalty here, and he’s going to hear it from the fans in New York even more than he already has, and as we recall it wasn’t the easiest transition. We’re not discounting that. But we also think that maybe, just maybe, he might have been regretting his pecuniary decision.

Especially since he had to change his hair.
