ESPN’s making your dream a reality, with a 3D TV network–the first of it’s kind–which will debut sometime this year. It will broadcast a minimum of 85 live sporting events, including the 2011 BCS championship game, the X games, and a bunch of World Cup matches.

No word on whether or not these games will continue to be broadcast the normal way as well, though we imagine that they will appear on regular ESPN as usual.

This technology has been in the works for a couple of years–lucky fans in a few movie theaters have seen 3D football, and if you go to USC, you may have watched a 3D presentation on your campus.

We’re playing Mexico.  Does this game matter?

The answer?  Well, kindasortamaybe.  Historically, team that get a bunch of points from this level of competition are wll-positioned for World Cup play.  The USA currently has 10 points, and with several games left, we’re very likely to gain a few more somewhere in there. Over the course of the past few years, teams with at least fifteen points from this level of competition have qualified for the World Cup.  So will we be ok? Probably.

Of course, Mexico is a traditional soccer powerhouse and beating them,  especially on their turf, would be psychologically huge for a team that’s proven that intangibles and psychology are hugely important.  If we learned nothing else from the FIFA craziness, and ensuing ESPY award,  we sure learned that.

Another strand of the story?

The game matters for Mexico.  The CONCACAF has three automatic bds to the World Cup.  Due to vagaries of schedule and other things you can read about here if you like, if the US manages even a tie–which’ll give us one point in the standings–against Trinidad and Tobago when we play them, Mexico’s awfully unlikely to manage an automatic berth.  So really? Pressure’s on them. Bring it on.

But today, Appalachian State had some bad news: their quarterback, three-time All-American Armanti Edwards, is out for 2-4 weeks with….a mowing injury?  Yup. He was mowing his lawn.  Now, UPH lives in what we’ll charitably call an urban mecca (there’s certainly enough traffic!), and thus has no lawn.  But we’re pretty sure we’ve previously mowed one without running over our foot…

Other sports injuries that make UPH feel coordinated?

–In 2001, Leeds United’s Rio Ferdinand spent too long with his feet on the coffee table…and strained a muscle in his tendon when he got up for his next beer.

–in 1995, Milan Rapaic of Hajduk Split in the Balkans missed a game after he stuck his boarding pass in his eye while boarding his flight.

–Atlanta Braves manager Roger Craig once cut his hand on a bra strap.  We assume he took one for the team and kept playing…

–Ken Griffey Jr. once missed a game because he pinched himself in his own cup. Ow. UPH clearly has not ever done this, but we told this story to our boyfriend, and he cringed.

–And finally, relief pitcher Greg Harris of the Texas Rangers injured his wrist….flicking sunflower seeds in the dugout.

The fan presence at these games, which are played at the University of Houston’s Robertson Stadium, is stellar.  The large Hispanic community in Houston has really embraced the team, they may get their own stadium,  and two competing, independently-organized fan sections (El Battalon and the Texian Army–click for MP3s!) bring instruments, wave flags,sing, throw confetti and crepe paper when the team scores, and are generally pretty fantastic.  UPH was inspired!

Upon being inspired, UPH, as we often do, decided to purchase some team apparel (in a color, clearly, other than pink.)  Now, UPH, being female, is not shaped such that unisex t-shirts, even ones with the adorable Bobby Boswell’s name on them, fit us.  In fact, they make UPH look like a blob, at best.  Imagine our surprise, then, when we found that of the literally fifty or so apparel options, not a single shirt or jersey available was cut for women.

Oh, yes, they had pink and light blue shirts…cut unisex.  Perusal of the team website reveals one single option, which all but eschews the Dynamo logo, instead featuring a girly flower design. Incredulous, we scoured the internet and local shops. Nope. Nothing.

Hey, Dynamo, you have a lot of female fans. Fans who want to show their support. Fans who will give you their money to wear something flattering.  You just lost UPH’s $30.  How many of the women currently squeezing themselves into size-XS unisex shirts in a futile effort to get some shape would upgrade to a nice women’s cut tee? I’m betting there’s lots out there.

Get on it, please, or we’re going to be forced to put together our own orange outfit*.
